Snyder is about 1.15 hours from Lubbock. West Texas really is full of gems & great people. Snyder is great place to visit that’s not too far & is a fun place for the whole family.
- Scurry County Museum (SCM): The museum is located on the campus of Western Texas College which is also a fun place to walk around! Since 1974, the SCM has shared the story of Scurry County & its pioneers through various exhibits & artifacts. We really enjoyed learning about the early ranches in the area along with the evolution of oil in the county. The museum also has a small gift shop with books, ornaments, bricks from the old Santa Fe Depot, and various trinkets. We highly recommend the Johnson-Sims Feud book! The staff was super friendly and were able to answer all of our questions.
- Scurry County Heritage Village: The village is similar to the National Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock. Take a step back in time as you visit historical structures. We loved seeing the oldest house in Snyder (Cornelius-Dodson House), Engine No. 5 train, the Dermott baseball park, and the Fluvanna Barber Shop. Great place for unique ‘gram-worthy pictures too.
- Towle Park: Though it was close to 100 degrees, we decided to take about a mile walk around Towle Park. Great place to walk, bike, and enjoy a picnic. The park also has a playground, splashpad, a pool nearby, a basketball court, disc golf, and a skate park.
- Shopping: We were so excited about all of the shopping options in Snyder! We tried to stop by most of them. Really trendy boutiques with clothes, kitchen gadgets, home décor, jewelry, kids items, and so much more. Many of these shops are located in the historic Snyder town square. It was really cool to see the historic structures, the Ritz theater, and all of the historical markers. Be sure to check out The Paper House, Bucks & Bows, Mason Jar Mercantile, The Ruffled Rooster, Defaid Emporium, Windflower, The Blessed Nest, and Deep Creek Market.
- Eating: After several recommendations from the locals, we ended up going to Cielo Mexican Restaurant. It was SO good with quick & friendly service. We got enchiladas, flautas, queso, and a hibiscus margarita. Here is the full menu. Plus, it was a very cool atmosphere with good music, TVs, and a nice patio. The locals also suggested: Amore Italian, Blackland Smokehouse, Ponderosa, The Butcher’s Block, Spanish Inn, and Givi’s Pub.
- Restored Sinclair Station: This 1935 triangular gas station was restored several years ago. Here is an article about its restoration. So much nostalgia & a great place for pictures. Totally worth the stop.
- History, History, History: Snyder is full of historical markers, old homes, graveyards, a jail from 1912, paleontology dig sites, & museums. Here is a list of historical markers.
